The police have recovered the body of a college student from the Brahmaputra River in Hossainpur, Kishoreganj. Based on preliminary findings, authorities suspect the death to be a murder, as the body bears multiple injury marks and stab wounds.

The body was recovered by the Bhairab River Police on Tuesday (March 17) around 3:30 PM. It was found floating under the Khurshid Mahal Bridge on the Brahmaputra River, located in the border area of the upazila near Pagla Thana in Gafargaon, Mymensingh.

The deceased, identified as 17-year-old Tarikul Islam Imon, was the son of Masud Mir, a local gold merchant from Dekia Mirpara in Ward 5 of Hossainpur Municipality. Imon was an 11th-grade student at a local BM College.

According to police and local sources, the discovery of the floating body Tuesday morning sparked a stir among residents near the bridge. Upon receiving the information, local police arrived at the scene and retrieved the body with the assistance of the River Police.

Mohammad Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pagla Thana, stated that the River Police were notified immediately after the report surfaced, and they subsequently handled the recovery operation.

The victim’s family claimed that Imon had been missing since 11:00 PM on Monday (March 16). After an exhaustive search, they rushed to the riverbank Tuesday morning upon hearing news of a floating body and identified it as Imon.

Sub-Inspector Md. Kamrul Hasan of the Bhairab River Police Outpost noted that the initial inquest revealed severe injuries to the neck and the back of the head, along with several stab wounds across the body. These findings suggest that he was murdered before being dumped into the river.

The body has been sent to the morgue at Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. Police have stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed once the autopsy report is available.
