A canal excavation program has been inaugurated at Aribil Canal in Nikli upazila of with the aim of increasing water flow, boosting agricultural production, and improving fisheries resources.
The program was inaugurated on Monday (March 16) morning by State Minister for Textiles and Jute at Aribil in Nikli upazila.
Speaking at the event, the State Minister said the government plans to excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals within five years. He added that the initiative is not limited to canal excavation alone; canals will also be connected to local rivers and wetlands to ensure natural water flow. This, he said, will significantly support agriculture, fisheries, and food production.
He further stated that although many canals are on government land, farmers cultivate crops there due to a lack of water. During excavation, the issue of farmers’ losses will be carefully considered. He emphasized that the government is people-friendly and the program will be implemented while keeping farmers’ interests in mind.
Among those present were Members of Parliament , , and , along with District Commissioner , Superintendent of Police , officials from the upazila administration, and leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations.
