Police recovered the body of 22-year-old Umme Sijzil Ifti from a rented house in the Alormela area of Kishoreganj city late Sunday night. The deceased, daughter of Shafiqul Islam from Nandail, Mymensingh, lived there with her husband, Mumtaz Mukul, a lecturer at Mushulli College and a local political leader. According to local residents, although Mukul lived primarily with his second wife, Ifti, the couple frequently engaged in domestic disputes. Neighbors reported hearing them argue on Sunday night, and later discovered Ifti’s body hanging by a rope through a window.
Upon arrival, police broke into the house to recover the body—noting that Mukul was not present at the time—and sent it to the Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. On Monday, police took Mukul into custody for questioning to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. While Kishoreganj Model Thana OC Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad stated that the incident is initially being treated as a suicide due to family feuds, a full investigation is underway, and formal legal action will be taken once an official complaint is filed.
