Special Correspondent, Sirajganj :
A novel cyber-scam ring has emerged, exploiting religious sentiments on social media and luring ordinary users with suspiciously cheap mobile operator offers to embezzle their money. Victims have reported that this fraudulent operation is actively being run through a Facebook profile named ‘Farhad Telecom’.
How the Scam Operates
Investigations reveal that the fraudulent ring builds immediate trust with users by utilizing profile and cover photos featuring individuals in religious attire, wearing caps and beards (1000203600.jpg, 1000203598.jpg).
Once trust is established, they post fake price charts (1000203602.jpg) using the official logos of the country’s top mobile operators—such as Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi, and Airtel—promising massive gigabyte (GB) and minute bundles at unrealistically low prices.
When unsuspecting customers call or message the mobile number displayed in the screenshots (+880 1805-646345) to purchase these attractive offers, the scammers demand advance payment. As soon as the money is sent via mobile financial services like bKash, Rocket, or Nagad, Mehedi Hasan and his accomplices immediately block the customers’ Facebook profiles and phone numbers.
Victim Testimonials and Official Steps
Several victims shared that they sent money hoping to purchase cheap internet and talk-time packages, only to end up completely defrauded. Formal complaints have already been lodged with Grameenphone Customer Care (121) regarding this matter. Mobile network operators strongly advise users to stay away from such unauthorized third-party deals and to thoroughly verify any offer before making a transaction.
Legal and Preventive Advice
Cybersecurity experts warn that sending money to personal social media accounts without verified or official page checkmarks is highly risky. If you fall victim to such scams, you should immediately take the following steps:
- File a General Diary (GD) at your local police station: Submit a written complaint along with screenshots of the transaction details and the phone numbers involved.
- Report to the Cyber Crime Investigation Division: You can directly contact and report the fraudulent Facebook page through the official channels of the Cyber Police.
- Use Official Operator Apps: Refrain from buying packs or recharging from external, unverified sources. Always use official applications like ‘MyGP’, ‘MyRobi’, or ‘MyBL’.
As these fraudsters continue to exploit religious emotions and low-price traps to siphon off the hard-earned money of ordinary citizens, general users are urgently calling upon law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.
