Efforts Underway to Revive Jute Industry and Discourage Raw Jute Export: State Minister
Meanwhile, State Minister for Textiles and Jute, Md. Shariful Alam, stated that research activities are ongoing to develop high-quality, indigenous jute seeds to revive the lost glory of the country’s traditional jute industry and reduce dependency on foreign seeds.
He also mentioned that the government is officially discouraging the export of raw jute to ensure an adequate supply of raw materials for the domestic jute-based industries.
The State Minister made these remarks as the chief guest at a program organized by the District Administration and the Department of Social Services to distribute financial aid checks and sewing machines among underprivileged and helpless women. The event took place following his participation in the District Law and Order Committee meeting at the Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner’s conference room on Sunday afternoon. Later, while speaking with journalists, he highlighted the government’s various plans for the development of the jute sector.
The State Minister said, “At one time, Bangladesh’s jute was one of the world’s primary export commodities. Known as the ‘Golden Fiber,’ jute contributed significantly to the country’s economy, but the sector lagged behind over time due to various reasons. The current government is working to bring back that golden past of jute through modern technology, research, and policy support.”
Md. Shariful Alam added, “To expand the jute-based industry in the country, it is essential to ensure a regular supply of raw materials to the factories. For this reason, the government is officially discouraging the export of raw jute. This will allow local industries to easily access the necessary raw materials, thereby boosting the production and export of diversified jute products.”
He further stated, “We want value-added jute products to be exported abroad instead of raw jute. This will foster industrial growth, create employment, and increase foreign exchange earnings.”
Regarding farmers, the State Minister emphasized that the government always prioritizes their interests. He expressed hope that farmers would receive fair prices for their produced jute this year, just like the previous year. He also assured that market management and necessary policy support would continue, keeping the farmers’ production costs in mind.
During the program, financial assistance checks totaling BDT 1,015,000 were distributed among 18 underprivileged and helpless women. Additionally, sewing machines were distributed to five other women to facilitate self-employment and self-reliance.
Speakers noted that the government is implementing various social safety net programs to ensure the economic empowerment of women. Providing financial assistance and employment tools will play a vital role in making women self-dependent.
The event was attended, among others, by Mazharul Islam, Member of Parliament for Kishoreganj-1 (Sadr-Hasanpur); Jalal Uddin, Member of Parliament for Kishoreganj-2 (Katiadi-Pakundia); Deputy Commissioner Sohana Nasrin; Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mizanur Rahman; senior officials of the district administration; representatives of various government departments; public representatives; and local dignitaries.
