A call has been made to open the ferry ghat lease at Balikhola Ghat in Karimganj Upazila of Kishoreganj district to ease the hardships of local farmers. This appeal was made by VP Saiful Islam Sumon, former Upazila Chairman of Karimganj Upazila.
VP Sumon’s father, former Member of Parliament Kabir Uddin Ahmed, is a valiant freedom fighter and the Liberation Company Commander of Kishoreganj. It was under his leadership that the flag of independence was hoisted in Kishoreganj. Thousands of Razakar forces surrendered their arms and ammunition under his command.
Kabir Uddin Ahmed is among those whose blood and sweat laid the proud foundation of the BNP in Kishoreganj district.
VP Sumon stated that Balikhola Ghat serves as a vital communication link for local farmers. However, due to the current lease arrangement, farmers are facing excessive transportation costs and various hardships in moving their produce. Therefore, he emphasized that opening the ghat lease is essential to protect the interests of the farming community.
It has been reported that the current leaseholder of the ghat, Ronu Darbari, has also expressed his agreement on the matter. He stated that he would cooperate with any positive decision taken in consideration of the farmers’ convenience.
Meanwhile, local farmers and residents have welcomed this initiative. They are hopeful that if the lease is opened, transportation costs will decrease and marketing of agricultural products will become much easier.
According to locals, if effective steps are taken promptly, the suffering of farmers will be significantly reduced and a positive impact will be felt on the economic activities of the area.
