KISHOREGANJ, BANGLADESH — The body of Shakil (28), a Bangladeshi expatriate worker from East Katiarchar in Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila, was repatriated on Friday midnight, 28 days after his tragic demise in a Saudi Arabian prison. The repatriation was managed under a government initiative facilitated by Shariful Alam, the State Minister for Textiles and Jute and MP for Kishoreganj-6. Shakil had migrated to Saudi Arabia in 2019 after securing a loan of 400,000 BDT through a Dhaka-based recruiting agency, but later faced legal complications over his Akama (work permit), leading to his employment elsewhere and subsequent arrest by Saudi police. According to family members, Shakil had grown physically weak in detention and had requested financial assistance for legal procedures, prompting his family to send nearly 180,000 BDT for his bail. Relatives claim that on May 15, an air conditioner explosion inside the prison caused heavy smoke, leading to Shakil’s death from severe respiratory distress. Following financial hurdles regarding the 8,000 Saudi Riyal repatriation fee, local political leaders intervened to secure state assistance. Mourning the loss of the family’s sole breadwinner, Shakil’s father, Omar Faruq, appealed for government financial support, while local residents urged authorities to strengthen legal protections for migrant workers abroad.
